Exploring the Pros and Cons of Artificial Turf vs. Sod

Aesthetics and Natural Appeal:

ARTIFICIAL TURF PROS

• Consistent green appearance year-round

• Low-maintenance, no need for mowing or fertilizing

• Resistant to pests and diseases

ARTIFICIAL TURF CONS:

• Some may find it lacks the natural look and feel of real grass, looking synthetic

• Color may fade due to prolonged exposure to sun and weather elements

• Does not provide the same cooling effects in warm weather as traditional sod

TRADITIONAL SOD PROS:

  • Instantly provides a natural and lush lawn

  • Offers a genuine feel underfoot

  • Can be visually appealing with proper care

TRADITIONAL SOD CONS:

• Requires ongoing maintenance, including mowing, watering, and fertilizing

• Vulnerable to pests, diseases and dog spots

Artificial Turf

Installation and Time Considerations:

ARTIFICIAL TURF PROS:

• Relatively quick installation process, depending on the size

• Establishes a uniform look immediately

ARTIFICIAL TURF CONS:

• Requires proper ground preparation for optimal results, see info below

• Initial installation cost will be a significant investment, see pricing below

•Can involve a notable amount of waste depending on the shape

TRADITIONAL SOD PROS:

• Provides an immediate transformation of the landscape with a quick installation process, see info below

• Less expensive upfront installation cost

TRADITIONAL SOD CONS:

• Longer establishment time; may need 2+ weeks to become fully rooted

• Weather conditions can impact successful installation and longterm outcomes

Traditional Sod

Maintenance Requirements:

ARTIFICIAL TURF PROS:

•Minimial maintenance; no need of watering, mownig or fertilizing

• Durable and resistant to wear and tear

ARTIFICIAL TURF CONS:

• Requires occasional cleaning to remove debris and prevent odors

• Can become warm in direct sunlight

TRADITIONAL SOD PROS:

• Provides immediate erosion control, especially useful in sloped areas

• Contributes to soil health by maintaining moisture and soil structure

• Cooler surface temperature compared to artificial turf

TRADITIONAL SOD CONS:

• Regular maintenance required, including mowing, watering, and pest control

• Susceptible to wear and tear in high-traffic areas and dog spots

Artificial Turf

Environmental Impacts:

ARTIFICIAL TURF PROS:

• Conserves water and doesn't require irrigation

• Reduces the need for pesticides and fertilizers

ARTIFICIAL TURF CONS:

• Made from non-biodegradable materials, posing disposal challenges

• Risk of shedding microplastics into the environment, more info below

• Manufacturing/transportation have environmental impacts

TRADITIONAL SOD PROS:

• Natural and biodegradable

• Sequesters carbon dioxide and produces oxygen, supporting the local ecosystem

TRADITIONAL SOD CONS:

• Requires water for establishment and ongoing maintenance, more info below

•Traditional maintenance practices may involve pesticides and fertilizers

Traditional Sod

INSTALLATION PROCESS:

ARTIFICIAL TURF:

  1. Area Preparation: clear the area, level the ground, grade for drainage

  2. Base Construction: install 3” roadbase material, compact with tamper, fine grading

  3. Install Turf: measure and cut the turf to size, adjust direction and align edges and joints

  4. Seaming: secure the edges with anchor pins or nails every 6-8”

  5. Edging: add edging and seam the joints with tape and adhesive

  6. Add Infill: apply anti-microbial infill and power broom or brush the turf

  7. Finishing Touches: trim excess and complete final inspection

TRADITIONAL SOD:

  1. Area Preparation: clear the area, level the ground, grade for drainage

  2. Soil Testing (Optional): to determine the pH and nutrient levels if necessary

  3. Soil Improvement: add organic amendment/compost, rototill in with existing soils

  4. Grading: ensure proper drainage away from structures, rake to smooth surface

  5. Laying/Trimming: lay sod in staggered pattern, use sharp knife to trim edges

  6. Rolling (Optional): roll sod to ensure good contact between sod roots and the soil

  7. Watering: water immediately after installation and regularly for the first two weeks then gradually reduce frequency until established

PRICING:

ARTIFICIAL TURF:

Average Cost: artificial turf installation ranges from $11-$15 per square foot (including excavation, base prep and turf installation).

Factors Influencing Turf Cost

  1. Quality (brand) of artificial turf chosen

  2. Size and shape of the space (square, rectangle shapes will typically cost less than curved and organic shapes due to less waste and labor to cut)

  3. Complexity and location of the turf within the property

  4. Regional variations

TRADITIONAL SOD:

Average cost: traditional sod installation ranges from $2.00-$2.50 per square foot (including soil amendment, tilling and sod installation).

NOTE: Scienturfic has recently introduced TAHOMA31 Bermudagrass to the Denver market which we hope will be a game changer in our climate. Some advantages it provides is low water use, drought and heat tolerant and TRUE low maintenance. Tahoma31 ranges from $2.75-$3.00 per square foot and requires much less water long term.

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS:

  • Lifespan: Traditional sod can last a lifetime with proper care. Artificial turf is expected to last 15-20 years with regular upkeep.

  • Eco-Turf (also supplied by Scienturfic) is the type of sod we at Twisted Vine Design prefer to install which is a blend of 3-5 hybrid bluegrass varieties that are specifically grown for the Colorado climate. It is adapted for drought and cold tolerance and also tolerates high traffic areas.

  • Concerns regarding microplastics and potential carcinogens, a detailed look here:
